This course is designed to equip reception staff with essential triage skills, enabling them to efficiently and accurately assess patient needs over the phone as well as in-person.

Participants will learn how to identify urgent medical conditions, prioritise patient appointments, and know when to escalate issues to clinical team members.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the concept and purpose of triage in a General Practice setting.
  • Perform phone triage effectively, using consistent protocols and decision tools.
  • Identify medical presentations that require an ambulance.
  • Recognise conditions that necessitate hospital or emergency department visit.
  • Determine which patient presentations should be scheduled for a same-day appointment at the practice.
  • Know when to escalate calls to the clinical team for further assessment and action.
  • How to use decision tools to aid in accurate triage and patient prioritisation based on urgency.
